Camping

Campgrounds - Plumas National Forest

Camping in the great outdoors of the Plumas National Forest offers a wide range of experiences from backcountry solitude to developed recreational areas that offer paved roads, piped water and sites for individuals with disabilities.

The Plumas National Forest is vast, spanning over 1.2 million acres of scenic mountain lands and pristine lakes in the northern edge of the Sierra Nevada. In general, the fee campgrounds are open from April until October. Those campgrounds at higher elevations open in mid May to late May. These campgrounds are operated by permit with the U.S. Forest Service. Many campsites can be reserved, but some are kept on a “first come-first serve” basis.

There are eight developed recreation areas within the Plumas National Forest which include: North Fork, Bucks Lake, Sly Creek, Little Grass Valley, Lakes Basin, Lake Davis, Frenchman Lake and Antelope Lake.

There are 14 no fee campgrounds through out the Plumas National Forest. The campgrounds have vault toilets, picnic tables, and primitive fire rings. However, there is no piped water at these sites.

Most of the land in the Plumas National Forest is open to camping, with no charge – it’s yours for the choosing. Information about campfire permits, passes, stay limitations, alerts, and more visit www.fs.usda.gov/plumas for complete details about camping in Plumas County.
